The Photographic Chronicles - Week 7 - Oise, Seine, and Paris at Night

Writer: Lo KeeLo Kee

Continuing the Photographic Chronicles with a few snapshots from the seventh week.

Childhood Memory

After exploring the banks of the Marne multiple times, I felt the urge to revisit a town I had discovered as a child during a school trip. In my memory, it was a charming village with cobbled quays, dotted with barges, and an authentic atmosphere.

Without hesitation, I packed my gear and headed to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, where the Oise meets the Seine.

The problem with my plan was that it was based on the memories of a 10-year-old... and a quarter-century had passed since then. Needless to say, reality didn't quite match my expectations, and I was disappointed when rediscovering the place.

Bouncing Back

I wasn't really inspired, and despite my years of experience, that feeling still frustrates me. But sometimes, we have to accept that the conditions just aren't right.

After spending a couple of hours there, I took the train back without a second thought. Still, I came away with a few decent shots.

Finally, back at Gare Saint-Lazare, I found enjoyment in capturing the industrial architecture of the freight halls, the rails, and the few trains still running.

Alone in the Night

Having worked nights in a previous life, I can tell you that Paris completely transforms depending on the time of day. The atmosphere of the evening, the night, and the early morning shift within a span of 12 hours, but each is distinctly different.

But of all the nights of the week, the Sunday to Monday night is, in my experience, the most unique. It has a special vibe, and that's when I went out with my cameras.

Nota bene: I constantly remind my students that shooting in low light leads to a loss in image quality, and the only way to compensate for that is by using a tripod. Yet, even though I had mine with me, I didn't use it… Laziness won!

Don't worry, I'll return to some locations to photograph them properly!
