Spring 2020, I'm going to Venice as COVID starts to make waves in Europe. The Venice carnival is canceled, tourists delete all their reservations, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to photograph the city without their presence.

On site there are only locals and a handful of foreigners. Aware of my privilege, I set out to travel the length and breadth of the city, photographing both the key places and the lesser known places.

The photo is taken in front of a dark, low passage in a residential area of Venice. On the other side we see the door of a house in full light. The contrast draws the eye to this door.

Near Venice station, the Ponte degli Scalzi in backlight. At the top of it are the silhouettes of three men walking side by side. To the right of the image, the dome of the San Simeon Piccolo church stands out against the sky. Finally, the railing of the bridge, illuminated by the sun, guides the viewer's gaze towards the silhouettes at the top of the bridge.
